What is Social and Emotional Learning?
Social emotional learning (SEL) is a critical component of a student’s success and development. We believe that students who understand and demonstrate appropriate SEL skills need to:
- Develop and manage their emotions.
- Feel and show empathy for others.
- Determine and make a plan to make goals
- Establish and maintain healthy relationships.
- Make responsible decisions
A major part of SEL is being trauma informed. Providing the right tools and education to process trauma in a healthy way is critical to students’ ability to manage stress. BEI believes in a proactive approach with appropriate coping mechanisms and skills for our youth to battle life scenarios.

Eliminating Barriers in Education: How the BEI Curriculum Works
Brain Enrichment Initiative (BEI) provides a holistic SEL curriculum that focuses on supporting student brain health and follows the Ohio Department of Education’s Social and Emotional Learning Standards. We link the importance of SEL tools with education based off the known fact that there are many societal factors contributing to negative brain health.
Driving education through mentorship
BEI works within your school district’s community, utilizing a mentorship framework that supports educators in the development of their students’ skills of empathy, thoughtful listening, and genuine care for others.
Our mentorship program pairs adolescent students from a public, private, or charter school with an older adolescent student. The mentee will learn a curriculum from the mentor through physical activities, critical thinking discussions, and in a community-forward setting.
Sound minds build bright futures together
In addition to having regular support form a mentor, students will also participate in group setting activities. This part of the program helps students build a community of trust and respect between peers while discussing complex ideas. Participants are sure to make new friends, learn more about brain health, and develop mindfulness for one another.
Our mentorship program features a variety of 1-on-1 and group activities that students can participate in, including:
- Grounding techniques.
- Learning mindfulness through breathing, meditation, and yoga.
- Learning the Zones of regulation.
- Making a menu with high nutritional value.
- Hold debates with other peers.
A customizable curriculum for students
The BEI framework connects students with students to teach an enriched curriculum about SEL and brain wellness. Our curriculum works within your school district’s community and is customizable enough to accommodate the needs of their students. Our curriculum is optional and up to parental discretion. The program features the unique combination of social emotional learning and brain health education, including:
- Up to 16 Hour-long weekly guided sessions.
- Group-based social and emotional brain health activities.
- Access to tools and resources that promote positive brain health
- Emotional and mental wellbeing development.
- Norm-based assessment and progress monitoring.
Our Curriculum

In our program, a mentor will work with a mentee to complete a curriculum and lessons which follow the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s social emotional course of study with the addition of education on brain health.
Upon graduating from the program, students will have plenty of resources and be empowered to identify social and emotional skills, implement tools of growth, and feel a sense of belonging while being part of a supportive community.
